This is not an emergency service: Do not book a routine ECG to assess severe or acute symptoms. Call 999 for a life-threatening emergency. If you need medical help now but it is not life threatening, use NHS 111 online or call 111.
Whether a healthcare professional has recommended an ECG or you would like to arrange one yourself, we’re here to make the process simple and reassuring.
Provide Wellbeing offers 20-minute resting 12-lead ECG appointments from our Clinic Centre on The Crescent in Colchester, Essex. We’ll review your ECG trace during the appointment, explain any findings that may need further attention and give you a copy of the result to share with your GP, prescriber or referrer.
What is a 12-lead ECG?
An electrocardiogram, usually called an ECG or heart trace, records the electrical activity of your heart. A resting 12-lead ECG uses small sticky patches called electrodes on your chest, arms and legs to record your heart rate and rhythm while you lie still.
The recording itself takes only a few minutes. Your full appointment allows time to check the reason for the test, prepare you comfortably, obtain a clear trace and explain what happens next.
What happens during your ECG appointment?
- An appropriately trained member of staff will confirm your details, why the ECG has been requested and who you intend to share the result with.
- You will be asked to remove clothing from the upper half of your body. Paper covers, a gown or a blanket will be used as needed to protect your dignity and keep you comfortable.
- Small sticky electrodes will be placed on your chest, arms and legs and connected to the ECG machine. Some chest hair may need to be removed so the electrodes make good contact.
- You will lie still and breathe normally while the machine records the electrical signals from your heart. The recording itself is quick and does not use needles.
- The clinician will check the trace quality and provide a baseline interpretation during the appointment. They will explain any abnormalities seen and whether anything needs urgent attention. After the appointment, you will receive a copy of your ECG result to take to your GP, prescriber or referrer.
Preparing for a resting ECG
On the day of your appointment, it’s important that you wear a top that is easy to remove and loose, comfortable clothing. Do not apply body lotion, oil or talcum powder to your chest on the day of the test. If you have a significant amount of chest hair, you may be asked to trim the area before your appointment to help the ECG electrodes adhere securely.
Take your usual medicines unless the clinician responsible for your care has told you otherwise and tell us before the appointment if you have a pacemaker or defibrillator, a skin condition or open wound where electrodes may be placed, concerns about mobility or electrode adhesives, or would like a chaperone.
We ask that children and young people are accompanied by a parent or guardian to the appointment.
Your ECG result and on the day review
Every ECG trace will receive an initial review during the 20-minute appointment. The clinician will review it for abnormalities and anything that may need urgent attention, then explain the findings to you. This review is not a full diagnostic report and an ECG result alone does not always provide a diagnosis.
Following the appointment, you will receive a copy of the ECG result. If the trace requires urgent attention, the clinician may also provide an accompanying letter and will update the clinical record. If the result is normal, you will be advised to take it back to your GP or other medical professional for review. If you want to discuss the result in the context of your symptoms, medical history or treatment, you can book a separate self-pay GP appointment.
When might a clinician request an ECG?
A GP, prescriber or another healthcare professional may request a resting ECG as part of an assessment or before making a treatment decision. Reasons can include:
- checking heart rate and rhythm at the time of the test
- investigating a non-urgent symptom or finding as part of a wider clinical assessment
- monitoring an existing condition or the effects of certain medicines
- providing a baseline recording when a prescriber has specifically requested one
An ECG is not automatically needed before every medicine, activity or health review. If you are unsure whether this is the correct test, ask the clinician or organisation that requested it before you book.
ECGs requested before or during medication
Some prescribers request an ECG before starting or while monitoring certain medicines. This can include medication used for ADHD, but an ECG is not routinely required for every person before ADHD medication. The prescriber decides whether the test is needed and remains responsible for the treatment decision.
Before booking, tell your prescriber that this service supplies a copy of the ECG result rather than a separate written report. Check that this meets their requirements, and bring their request and contact details to your appointment.

ECG Services Help and Resources
No. A resting ECG is a snapshot of the heart’s electrical activity at one point in time. A normal result does not rule out every heart condition or an intermittent problem that was not happening during the recording.
It also does not assess how well your heart functions or show structural abnormalities. Other tests may be needed depending on your symptoms or the reason for the ECG.
