OUR AUTISM & ADHD SERVICES
NHS psychoeducation &
non-medication support
Psychoeducation and non-medication support are a core part of NHS neurodevelopmental care, regardless of whether medication is used.
This page explains what psychoeducation is, how it is delivered, and how non-medication approaches support everyday life for children and young people.
We provide practical, evidence-based strategies to help you and your child/young person navigate daily life with confidence and clarity.
What is psychoeducation?
Psychoeducation helps individuals and families to:
- understand ADHD or Autism
- recognise how these conditions may affect everyday life
- develop practical strategies and coping skills
Psychoeducation is not therapy and does not involve medication. Its purpose is to support understanding, confidence, and informed decision-making.
How psychoeducation is delivered
The programme includes:
- Session 1: Delivered at the conclusion of the diagnostic assessment, following confirmation of diagnosis
- Session 2: A virtual appointment with a clinician approximately two weeks after diagnosis
- Session 3: A further virtual psychoeducation appointment approximately six weeks after the second session
Each session typically lasts around 30 minutes.
Families are also provided with an information pack containing relevant resources.
What psychoeducation covers
Completing this 10-week journey ensures that if medication is started, it is supported by a home and school environment that truly understands the diagnosis.
Psychoeducation for ADHD typically includes:
- understanding ADHD and how it may affect daily life
- behaviour and emotional regulation strategies
- support strategies for home and education settings
- sleep, routine, and wellbeing
Review following psychoeducation
Following completion of the psychoeducation programme (approximately 10 weeks):
- the service will check in with the parent or carer to review how helpful the sessions have been
- a brief questionnaire may be used to gather feedback
This review usually takes place around three months after diagnosis and helps inform next steps.
Psychoeducation for ADHD (Children & Young People)
Under the NHS, for children and young people diagnosed with ADHD, psychoeducation is delivered as a 10 week structured programme following diagnosis and is a required step before medication is considered.
Psychoeducation support for Autism
For Autism, non-medication support focuses on:
- understanding individual strengths and needs
- sensory and environmental adjustments
- communication strategies
- planning and predictability
- reducing stress and overload
There is no medication treatment for Autism itself.
Support is practical, person-centred, and focused on understanding and adjustment.

The practitioners on the day were clearly very experienced and cleverly managed to get my daughter away from me for the assessment, which I’d not expected. Getting the result so quickly on the day was great and the whole experience was nowhere near as stressful as I feared it would be.
