OUR AUTISM & ADHD SERVICES
Self-pay adult Autism assessment
An Autism assessment in adulthood can help people better understand how they think, communicate, and experience the world.
Many adults seek an assessment later in life after recognising lifelong patterns that may have affected relationships, education, work, or wellbeing. An assessment can provide clarity, validation, and a clearer sense of next steps, whether or not a diagnosis is made.
At Provide Wellbeing, adult Autism assessments are carried out by appropriately qualified clinical teams, following NICE guidance and recognised diagnostic standards.
Who this assessment is for
This assessment may be appropriate for adults who experience:
- differences in social communication or interaction
- sensory sensitivities or sensory-seeking behaviours
- a strong need for routine, predictability, or structure
- difficulties with change, uncertainty, or social expectations
- lifelong patterns that have impacted work, relationships, or mental health
People come for an assessment for many reasons. Some are seeking a diagnosis; others want a clearer understanding of themselves.
How this assessment can be accessed
We currently provide adult autism assessments through our self-pay pathway. You can find out more about our self-pay services here: self-pay assessments.
Before the assessment
Referral and questionnaires
Once a referral is accepted (or a self-pay registration is confirmed), we will ask you to complete questionnaires to help us understand your experiences and history.
Please note that we cannot progress with an assessment until all questionnaires and forms have been completed, returned to us and triaged.
We know that filling out forms about your life can feel overwhelming. If you need any adjustments or support in completing these, our friendly team is just a phone call away.
These may include:
- Self-report questionnaires
- Parent/partner/family questionnaires
- Developmental and background history
- Information about education, work, relationships, and daily life
If available, you may also choose to share information from someone who knows you well, but this is not always required.
Clinical triage
Our clinical team reviews the information to:
- confirm that an Autism assessment is appropriate
- plan the assessment in a way that best meets your needs
- consider whether other assessments (such as ADHD) may also be helpful
You’ll be contacted to confirm next steps.
What happens during an adult Autism assessment
Who you’ll see
Assessments are carried out by experienced clinical teams, which may include:
- psychiatrists
- psychologists
- speech and language therapists
- occupational therapists
- other appropriately trained professionals with expertise in Autism assessment
Our assessments are carried out in a respectful, inclusive, and supportive manner, with reasonable adjustments available where needed.
What the assessment involves
The assessment includes:
- A detailed discussion about your developmental history and life experiences
- Exploration of communication style, social interaction, sensory processing, and routines
- Review of questionnaires and supporting information
- Discussion of strengths, challenges, and coping strategies
Structured assessment tools may be used where appropriate, but not every assessment looks the same. Clinical teams tailor the process to the individual.
What happens after an adult Autism assessment
Outcome and diagnosis
After the assessment:
- The clinical team will explain the outcome clearly and sensitively
- You’ll have time to ask questions and discuss what the outcome means for you
- If a diagnosis of Autism is made, this will be explained in clear, accessible language
If Autism is not diagnosed, we will still offer guidance, advice, and signposting where helpful.
Written report
Following the assessment, you will receive a written diagnostic report.
The report includes:
- what was assessed and how
- the outcome or diagnosis
- how conclusions were reached
- recommendations and next steps
Reports are written in clear, accessible language and can be shared with your GP, employer, or other professionals.
Autism assessments do not lead to medical treatment. Support focuses on understanding, reasonable adjustments, and appropriate support planning.
