We understand that children may struggle with language and communication, so it is important to know how to interact with those with autism in order to boost their skills. Here are some resources put together by our clinicians to provide a starting point for language and communication development. “More Than Words – Helping Parents Promote Communication and Social Skills in Children with Autism Spectrum Disorder” by Fern Sussman, is a Hanen publication available via Amazon, Winslow Press, or your local library. This is a useful book which aims to help parents promote communication and social skills in children with autism spectrum disorder. Further information is available at www.hanen.org. This book will explain your child’s stage of the communication and will give ideas on how to move on to the next stage. ‘First Steps in Intervention with Your Child with Autism: Frameworks for Communication’ by Phil Christie, Elizabeth Newson, Wendy Prevezer, and Susie Chandler is a book that highlights some useful communication skills and strategies that would be useful for your child. ‘The Autism Language Launcher: A Parent’s Guide to Helping Your Child Turn Sounds and Words into Simple Conversations’ by Kate Wilde may offer helpful ideas to use with your child. ‘Uniquely Human: A Different Way of Seeing Autism’ by Barry Prizant. Helping your child to use language and communicate correctly is useful for their social development. Please speak to one of our therapists if you are looking for further assistance with your child’s language development.
