OUR AUTISM & ADHD SERVICES
Post-diagnostic support and
signposting
Everyone who completes an assessment with Provide Wellbeing is offered post-diagnostic information, advice, and signposting, regardless of outcome.
This support helps individuals and families understand the assessment outcome and identify appropriate next steps.
Receiving a diagnosis can bring a mix of emotions, from relief to uncertainty. We believe that a diagnosis should be a doorway to better support. Whether you are navigating a NHS pathway or a private assessment, our goal is to ensure you never feel you have to walk the next steps alone
What post-diagnostic support means
Post-diagnostic support focuses on:
- understanding what the diagnosis means in everyday life
- recognising strengths as well as challenges
- identifying practical strategies and adjustments
Support is individualised and proportionate to need.
Support following an Autism diagnosis
If Autism is diagnosed, post-diagnostic support typically includes:
- explanation of Autism in clear, accessible language
- discussion of how Autism may affect communication, sensory processing, routines, and daily life
- advice on reasonable adjustments at home, in education, or at work
- signposting to:
- local authority services
- voluntary and community organisations
- national Autism support charities
Autism support focuses on understanding and adjustment, not medical treatment.
Support following an ADHD diagnosis
If ADHD is diagnosed, post-diagnostic support includes:
- information about ADHD and how it may affect attention, organisation, emotional regulation, and behaviour
- practical strategies for home, school, work, or daily life
- signposting to appropriate resources and services
- medication where appropriate
For children and young people, NHS post-diagnostic support also includes a structured psychoeducation programme, which is a required step before medication is considered.
For many, medication is a key part of managing ADHD. However, clinical safety is our priority. In line with NICE guidelines, all children and young people being seen under the NHS must complete a structured psychoeducation programme before medication can be considered. This ensures you have the strategies and understanding needed to manage ADHD holistically
Support when the criteria for a diagnosis is not met
Even if you or your child/young person do not meet the full clinical criteria for a diagnosis, the assessment process provides a deep understanding of you or your child/young person’s unique profile. We will still provide you with a detailed report and signposting to ensure you or your child/young person can access the right support for the challenges you are facing.
If the assessment outcome does not result in a diagnosis:
- the clinical team will explain why
- guidance will be offered about alternative explanations
- signposting will be provided to other appropriate services or resources
How signposting works
Signposting may include:
- written information and resources
- recommendations for local or national services
- guidance for schools, colleges, or workplaces
- advice about accessing support through your GP or local authority
The type of signposting provided depends on individual needs and local availability.
