Virtual Autism Assessments
(ages 8-17)
Our Virtual Autism Assessment Pathway provides a full, NICE-compliant autism diagnosis for children aged 8-17, completed securely online from home. Delivered by specialist clinicians, the assessment includes ADOS, ADI-R and a comprehensive diagnostic report.
While our assessments follow NICE guidelines and are widely used by schools and healthcare providers, we would advise families to contact their Local Authority directly to confirm whether a privately funded assessment will be recognised in their specific circumstances.
These services are available via:
Self-pay
Taking the step towards an autism assessment for your child can sometimes feel both overwhelming and challenging. Here at Provide Wellbeing, we understand the importance of creating a process that is a calm, reassuring, simple and clear.
Our Virtual Autism Assessment Pathway offers an alternative to face-to-face assessment and is designed to be flexible, accessible and reassuring for both children and their families, particularly those who may find clinical settings overwhelming or live far from specialist services.
Why Choose a Virtual Autism Assessment?
✔ A calmer, more natural environment
Children often feel most at ease in their own space. Being at home can reduce anxiety and sensory overwhelm, helping them engage more naturally during their assessment.
✔ Convenient for busy families
Virtual appointments remove the need for travel, lower disruption to school and work schedules, and make assessments accessible no matter where you live.
✔ High clinical standards you can trust
In our virtual pathway, we use the same trusted assessment tools as we do in person, including:
- ADOS (Autism Diagnostic Observation Schedule)
- ADI-R (Autism Diagnostic Interview – Revised)
Every assessment follows NICE guidelines.
✔ Delivered by specialist clinicians
Your child will be assessed by members of our experienced neurodevelopmental team – including clinical psychologists, speech and language therapists, mental health nurses and occupational therapists – who specialise in supporting children and young people with autism.
How it works
Who Is the Virtual Pathway Suitable For?
The virtual pathway may be right for your child if they:
✔ Are aged 8–17
✔ Communicate verbally in full sentences
✔ Have access to a laptop or tablet with a camera, microphone and stable internet connection
✔ Are comfortable engaging on screen and able to take part in online sessions for a period of time
If a virtual assessment isn’t the best option, we will support you in exploring appropriate face-to-face alternatives.
What’s Included in the Assessment Pathway
1. Enquiry & Initial Questionnaire
Once you contact us, we send short questionnaires to understand your child’s communication, learning profile and everyday needs.
2. Eligibility Review
A clinician reviews your answers and lets you know whether a virtual pathway is suitable. If not, we’ll recommend a face-to-face assessment option instead.
3. Parent & School Questionnaires
If your child can proceed virtually, you and their school will complete more detailed questionnaires. Children aged 12 and over will also be asked to complete a self-report questionnaire. This information helps our clinicians understand your child’s development and determine suitability for the autism assessment.
4. Clinical Review of All Information
Our team carefully reviews all questionnaires before confirming whether we can move ahead with the virtual autism assessment.
5. Virtual Assessment Appointments
Once your child has been deemed eligible for the autism assessment via a virtual pathway, the team will contact you to book the assessment appointments. All appointments are delivered securely via Microsoft Teams. Your child’s assessment is made up of the following stages:
- ADOS assessment – a structured, play-based session (approx. 60 minutes)
- ADI-R interview – an in-depth parent/carer interview (approx. 2 hours)
During the ADOS assessment, you will be asked to have five everyday household objects available. These will be used as part of the structured assessment activities, and your clinician will guide you through what to use on the day.
6. Diagnostic Outcome & Feedback Session
Following your child’s assessment, our multi-disciplinary team (MDT) meets to review all clinical observations and assessment information. The diagnostic outcome is not provided on the day of the assessment.
We then meet with you online to discuss the findings, share the diagnostic outcome (where appropriate), explain next steps, and provide an opportunity for you to ask any questions.
7. Full Diagnostic Report
You’ll receive a clear, comprehensive report via secure email.
This includes our clinical observations, diagnostic conclusions and helpful signposting for support. The report is written and finalised by our clinical team and is typically issued within approximately 6-8 weeks following the assessment.
