Tinnitus – What It Is and How to Manage It

Tinnitus affects around 1 in 7 adults in the UK, yet many people don’t realise it has a name, let alone that there are ways to manage it. If you’ve ever experienced a constant ringing, buzzing, hissing, or whistling sound in your ears when no external noise is present, you may be living with tinnitus.

In this blog, we’ll explore what tinnitus is, why it happens, and what you can do to regain peace of mind.

What Is Tinnitus?

Tinnitus is the perception of sound when no actual sound is present. It isn’t a condition in itself, but rather a symptom, often of an underlying issue with the auditory system. This includes the ear canal, eardrum, middle or inner ear, and the parts of the brain that process sound.

Common Descriptions of Tinnitus Include:

  • Ringing
  • Buzzing
  • Humming
  • Hissing
  • Whooshing
  • Clicking

It may affect one or both ears and can vary in pitch, volume, and frequency. For some, it’s a mild annoyance, for others, it can be distressing and impact sleep, concentration, and mental wellbeing.

What Causes Tinnitus?

Tinnitus can stem from a variety of causes, including:

  • Hearing loss – particularly age-related (presbycusis) or noise-induced
  • Earwax build-up – causing a blockage in the ear canal
  • Ear infections or eustachian tube dysfunction
  • Exposure to loud noise – such as concerts or industrial environments
  • Certain medications – including high-dose aspirin and some antibiotics
  • Underlying conditions – such as Ménière’s disease or high blood pressure
  • Stress and anxiety, which can exacerbate symptoms

Can Tinnitus Be Cured?

Currently, there’s no universal cure for tinnitus. However, it can be managed effectively, especially when addressed early.

Tinnitus Management Options

At Provide Wellbeing, we support patients across Colchester and the surrounding area with:

1. Private Hearing Assessments

Understanding your hearing profile is often the first step. If tinnitus is linked to hearing loss, using a hearing aid can reduce tinnitus symptoms significantly.

2. Microsuction Ear Wax Removal

Wax build-up is a common and reversible cause of tinnitus. Our gentle, professional microsuction service can quickly clear blocked ears.

3. Custom Ear Moulds for Noise Protection

If your tinnitus was triggered by noise exposure, ear protection is essential. We provide custom-moulded earplugs designed for musicians, swimmers, night workers, and more.

Tinnitus Awareness Week 2026

Running from 2–9 February, this year’s campaign, led by Tinnitus UK, focuses on safe listening and supporting those who live with tinnitus.

One key event: “A Quiet Night Out” at Union Chapel in London on 5 Feb, where musicians and experts are coming together to raise awareness about safe sound exposure.
